    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coloring matter which is soluble in a relatively safe solvent such as an alcoholic solvent and is used for a recording layer of an optical recording medium, and to provide the optical recording medium having the recording layer containing this coloring matter. SOLUTION: The azo metal chelate coloring matter, which consists of an azo compound represented by formula (1) and a metal atom, is soluble in a variety of solvents and can easily be formed into a film by a wet film-forming method such as a spin coat method to afford the recording layer of the optical recording medium. In the formula, X is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or an NR 3 group (wherein R 3 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group which may have a substituent or an aryl group which may have a substituent); R 1 and R 2 are each independently an alkyl group which may have a substituent, an aryl group which may have a substituent, an alkoxy group which may have a substituent or a halogen atom, and, R 1 and R 2 together may form a ring by bonding with each other; Z is a group having an active hydrogen; and ring B is an aromatic ring which may have a substituent and may condense with another ring.
