    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface layer forming a cylinder barrel surface, a thermal spray powder suited for a cylinder barrel surface, and a method for forming a cylinder barrel surface. SOLUTION: The surface layer for forming the cylinder barrel wall of a combustion engine block is proposed. The surface layer has a separated phase component separated from the phase of a residual substance. The surface layer is formed by plasma-spraying an iron-containing thermal spray powder in which all the components of the layer to be formed are incorporated. The surface layer markedly improves machinability because it can be simply applied without detriment to the important properties as a layer forming material such as abrasion resistance and frictional coefficient in the case when it is applied to a piston ring. Desirable components of the thermal spray powder includes in addition to iron, chromium, manganese, sulfur and carbon.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easily applicable thermal spraying method of a cylinder barrel of a cylinder block in a combustion engine in which the quality of the coating on the cylinder barrel is improved, and to provide a device therefor. SOLUTION: In the entire process of the coating operation, the flow rate of the air passing is maintained at 7 to 12 m/s. This air flow is generated by a sucking means, by which the air passes through a crank case of the cylinder block and is sucked from bottom parts of cylinder bores. Many sucking collars are provided to suck air, are connected with a sucking fan, and further move from the bottom part to lower end parts of the cylinder bores through the crank case. In the process of the coating operation, the pressure of the air flowing into the sucking fan through a sucking conduit is measured, and further, the value of the rate of the air flow passing through the cylinder bores is obtained by calculation.
