    • PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium which permits semi-permanent preservation of record and rewriting by consisting a recording layer of a specific thermotropic cholesteric mesomorphic glutamic acid ester copolymer. CONSTITUTION:The film of the recording layer consists of the thermotropic cholesteric mesomorphic glutamic acid ester copolymer expressed by the formula and forms hardly no liquid crystal structure at about an ordinary temp. without having the power to selectively reflect specific light. However, said film forms a cholesteric liquid crystal in a liquid crystal forming temp. region when the temp. thereof is increased by the irradiation of laser light thereon. The irradiated micro-region is quickly cooled and the cholesteric liquid crystal structure is fixed after the laser light moves. The record is thus held. The recording layer has the power to selectively reflect the light of a specific wavelength according to the cholesteric pitch when the cholesteric structure is once formed and therefore, the recording conditions are preliminarily so set that the wavelength conforms to the wavelength of the reading out laser light. The reading out is thereby easily executed by the difference in the reflectivity or transmitting.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording device having high capacity and making high speed recording feasible. SOLUTION: The information recording device is equipped with the information recording medium (1), a power source (7) to apply an electric field to the information recording medium, a light source (9) to make light irradiate the information recording medium, a means (12) to divide the light in two beams, a device (15) to add information to be recorded to a light beam out of divided two beams and a group of optical components (13, 8, 10, 14, 11, 15, 16) to make the two beams intersect each other on the medium so as to write in a record by forming interference fringes on a recording layer of the information recording medium. The information recording medium is characterized by having the recording layer (2) containing molecules with a charge transfer property, molecules with a nonlinear optical property and optically functional molecules whose three-dimensional structure changes with light irradiation and a pair of transparent ohmic electrodes (3a, 3b) sandwiching the recording layer and having conductance which is reduced on light irradiation.
