    • PURPOSE: To prepare pyrogallol in high selectivity, by dehydrogenating 1,2,3-cyclohexanetriol in the presence of a catalyst prepared by supporting Pd and Au or Te on activated charcoal and reducing with H
      2 in an aqueous medium.
      CONSTITUTION: A palladium compound and a gold compound or a tellurium compound are supported on activated charcoal by dipping, evaporation to dryness, etc., dispersed in an aqueous medium such as water, reduced by introducing hydrogen gas into the dispersion, pref. washed with water, and dried to obtain a catalyst. The amount of supported Pd is 1W30wt% of the activated charcoal, and that of Au or Te is 0.05W0.5g-atom per 1g-atom of Pd. Pref. 1W10wt% of an alkali metal compound is supported on the activated charcoal. Pyrogallol is prepared by the dehydrogenation of 1,2,3-cyclohexanetriol using the above catalyst in gaseous phase in an inert gas stream.

    • PURPOSE: An extracting agent selected from alcohols, ethers, acetals, other compounds is used to effect selective extraction and separation of polyhydric phenol from a mixture of polyhydric phenol and cyclohexanepolyol, thus producing high- purity polyhydric phenol.
      CONSTITUTION: In a nitrogen atmosphere, a mixture containing a polyhydric phenol such as catechol, resorcine or pyrogallol and cyclohexanepolyols such as 1,2,3- cyclohexyltriol is combined with at least one selected from alcohols, ethers, acetals, ketones, carboxylic anhydride, esters, nitriles, and nitroalkane as an extraction solvent and the extraction is conducted at room temperature to 80°C to separate the polyhydric phenol. The amount of the extraction solvent is preferably 0.5W2 times the weight of the polyhydric phenol. When an extraction solvent of high compatibility to water is used such as an alcohol or ketone, the removal of water is required before the extraction operation.
