    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide filtering techniques applied by an encoder and a decoder during a prediction stage of a video encoding and/or decoding process.SOLUTION: The filtering techniques may enhance the accuracy of predictive data used during fractional interpolation, and may improve predictive data of integer blocks of pixels. The present invention includes a useful twelve-pixel filter support that may be used for interpolation, techniques that use coefficient symmetry and pixel symmetry to reduce the amount of data needed to be sent between an encoder and a decoder to configure the filter support for interpolation, and techniques for filtering data at integer pixel locations in a manner that is similar to sub-pixel interpolation. Other aspects concern techniques for encoding information in a bitstream to convey the type of filter used, and optionally the filter coefficients used. Predictive coding of filter coefficients is also described.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for executing space up-conversion of a motion-compensated video for the video.SOLUTION: A horizontal sample in continuous fields is first interpolated by using a spatial interpolation technique. Interpolation of a corresponding vertical sample using a motion-compensated interlace release technique follows the interpolation of the horizontal sample. Such a technique can include adaptation recursive space up-conversion of a motion-compensated video, or the adaption recursive space up-conversion of the motion-compensated video using a generalized sampling theorem. The present invention can be used for converting a video captured on a portable device, for example, as a cellular phone so as to be sufficiently displayed on a television after that.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a frame rate while maintaining a natural movement of an object on an image.SOLUTION: A motion vector detector detects, based on a first image and a second image different from the first image among a plurality of images, motion vectors representing a movement of an object on the second image with respect to an object on the first image. An interpolation processing unit is configured to: calculate acceleration of the object on the image on the basis of the motion vectors; calculate an object position representing a position of an object on an interpolation image interpolated between the images adjacent in a time direction among the images on the basis of the calculated acceleration; and interpolate the interpolation image on which the object is drawn at the calculated object position. This disclosure is applicable, e.g., to an image processing apparatus interpolating an interpolation image for a moving image.
