    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure determining device for a water temperature sensor which positively determines a failure of the water temperature sensor irrespective of an operating situation.
      SOLUTION: It is determined whether an internal combustion engine at warming up is in an operating state of affecting a cooling water temperature WT on the basis of a calorific value estimated from a suction air capacity detected by an air flow sensor. Clocking by a timer is started from a point of time when it is determined that the internal combustion engine is in the operating state of affecting the cooling water temperature. The clocking by the timer is carried out under a condition that it is determined that the internal combustion engine is in the operating state of affecting the cooling water temperature after starting clocking. It is judged that there is a failure when a sensor detected value does not fluctuate out of a set water temperature range throughout a predetermined time (300 sec) even though it is determined that the internal combustion engine is in the operating state of affecting the cooling water temperature. Since determination is carried out by the timer in consideration of the calorific value fluctuating in response to an operating state of the internal combustion chamber, easy and accurate failure determination is enabled.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect misfiring by using a larger one of status values of crank rotation of first and second engine cylinders which are adjacent to each other in the firing order, as a crank rotating status value so as to determine misfiring of a predetermined engine cylinder of an engine in accordance with a variation in the crank rotating status value. SOLUTION: During operation of an engine 1, an ECU 30 successively computes a desired time of rotation of a crank shaft 23 for an n-th engine cylinder in a misfiring judging zone in accordance with a crank angle signal from a crank angle sensor 24. Further, it computes an averaged angular speed corresponding to the n-th engine cylinder from the desired rotation time, and stores the same in memory. Whether the present averaged angular speed is greater than the previous value is determined, and if it is true, the present value is substituted for the previous value, but it is false, the previous value is directly used. That is, the larger one of the present value and the previous value is selected, and is regarded as the previous value of the averaged angular speed. If the previous value is lower than a misfiring determination threshold value, it is determined that a n-1-th engine cylinder misfires.
