An electric field applied across the substrates is controlled in such a manner that the electrophoretic particles 12 having optical characteristics of a color to be displayed and the electrophoretic particles 12 in a color other than the color to be displayed, successively move to the retention electrode 32A and the retention electrode 32B, respectively, and subsequently, the electrophoretic particles 12 having the optical characteristics of the color to be displayed move to the surface electrode 28 side.
