    • PURPOSE:To make possible the detection of water in the longitudinal direction of an optical fiber and to obtain an inexpensive optical fiber sensor for detecting water by providing an inside coating layer having the Young's modulus lower than the Young's modulus of an outside coating layer to be formed on the outside of the inside coating layer to the optical fiber side and forming said inside coating layer of a resin compsn. layer contg. an absorptive material. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber sensor for detecting water consists of the inside coating layer contg. the water absorptive material on the outside of the optical fiber and the outside coating layer having the Young's modulus higher than the Young's modulus of the inside coating layer. The inside coating layer is the resin compsn. coating layer which contains the water absorptive material and swells by absorbing water. The Young's modulus of said layer is lower than the Young's modulus of the outside coating layer. Resins which are generally used as the coating material of optical fibers can be effectively used for the main resin component to constitute the resin compsn. Basically any materials which swell the resin compsn. by absorbing water are usable for the water absorptive material to be added to the resin component.
