    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily attain reduction in the thickness and overall size of an image display apparatus by bending an optical path extending from a light source 11 to a reflection type display element 20 at an appropriate position. SOLUTION: A concave mirror 12 is provided to an opposite side to the light source 11 with respect to the optical path of light directed from the reflection type display element 20 to an eyepiece optical system 30. Light from the light source 11 is made incident on the reflection type display element 20 after its optical path is bent by the concave mirror 12. Video light from the reflection type display element 20 is made incident on the eyepiece optical system 30. Namely, by providing the above-mentioned concave mirror 12, a layout in which the light directed from the light source 11 to the concave mirror 12 and the light directed from the reflection type display element 20 to the eyepiece optical system 30 are intersected by each other is obtained. Therefore, this allows the light source 11, the concave mirror 12 and the reflection type display element 20 to be collectively arranged in compactness adjacent to the eyepiece optical system 30 without increasing the power of an illumination optical system 10.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device provided with a liquid crystal layer exhibiting a polarizing function, and to provide a method of fabricating the liquid crystal display device.
      SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other; a pixel electrode formed on an inner surface of the first substrate; a first alignment layer which is composed of ferroelectric liquid crystal material on an upper part of the pixel electrode and has a first spontaneous polarization along a first direction; a common electrode formed on an inner surface of the second substrate; a second alignment film which is composed of ferroelectric liquid crystal material on an upper part of the common electrode and has a second spontaneous polarization along the first direction; a liquid crystal layer which is disposed between the first alignment layer and the second alignment layer and includes a nematic liquid crystal material and a dye material; and a first polarizer which is disposed on an outer surface of either of the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the liquid crystal layer exhibits a function as a second polarizer.
