On the other hand, the device is provided with a Bezier curve expression part 6 for expressing the elliptic arc with the third- order Bezier curve basing on this decision and for calculating the respective control points of curves, and plotting processing part 10 for transforming the respective control points calculated by this curve expression part 6 and for plotting the elliptic arc with desired accuracy corresponding to those respective transformed control points and an error from an error input part 9.

A comparing decision part 4 reads the size of the character pattern requested to be displayed, compares it with the sizes in the setting parts 1 and 2, and decides that the character pattern of size larger than the 1st reference value is displayed as it is, the substitute symbol pattern is substituted for the character pattern of size smaller than the 1st reference value and larger than the 2nd reference value, and the character pattern of size smaller than the 2nd reference value is not displayed, thereby transferring the result to a display part. Consequently, the character patterns which need not be displayed actually are deleted to speed up the pattern display operation.
