    • PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized waveguide type optical star coupler which has a large distribution number and has the high uniformity of branch ratio by making an optical waveguide to constitute a pitch conversion optical waveguide group into a pseudo single mode optical waveguide a little wider than a single mode waveguide in its width, and an addition, setting its munimum radius of curvature smaller than the minimum radius of curvature of the single mode optical waveguide in a Y-type optical branch waveguide group. CONSTITUTION:An input wavguide 2, the Y-type branch waveguide group 3, a width conversion waveguide group 4, a pitch converison waveguide group 5, and plural output waveguide arrays 6 are arranged on a silicon substrate 1, and are connected in order. The input waveguide 2 and the y-type branch waveguide group 3 are constitut ed of quartz type single mode optical waveguides, and the pitch conversion waveguide group 5 and the output waveguide array 6 are constituted of quartz type pseudo single mode optical waveguides a little wider in their widths. Since plural modes can exist in the pseudo single mode waveguide, an unnecessary mode is excited at the time of propagation at a curved part. Then, a tapered shaped width conversion waveguide is arranged between the single mode waveguide and the pseudo single node waveguide different form each other in their widths, and a connection loss is suppressed.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the waveguide type optical switch scarcely having wavelength dependency by using a Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer circuit type 3dB optical coupler, which is constituted by coupling two directional couplers by optical waveguides with slightly different length, as an element, and constituting a circuit type optical switch with phase shifters. CONSTITUTION:Two 3dB optical couplers as elements of the Mach-Zehnder type optical switch are constituted in the configuration of a Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer circuit and the optical path difference of the circuit is set a little bit shorter (nearly 1mum) than the short-wavelength end of an in-use wavelength range. Namely, the 3dB optical couplers 22 and 23 themselves are constituted by coupling the two directional couplers 22a and 22b, and 23a and 23b each by two optical waveguides 22c and 22d, and 23c and 23d each, and such a coupled waveguide is supplied with an optical path length difference of nearly 1mum; and those two 3dB optical couplers 22 and 23 are coupled by two optical waveguides 24 and 25 equipped with phase shifters to obtain desired optical switch constitution on the whole. Consequently, the waveguide type optical switch which operates while scarcely having wavelength dependency in a desired wavelength of, for example, 1.3 - 1.44mum.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the high-performance practical waveguide type optical isolator which requires no waveguide type nonreciprocal mode converting circuit by arranging a 1st TE-mode passing filter, a Faraday rotator, a reciprocal mode converting circuit, and a 2nd TE-mode passing filter in order from the incidence side of light. CONSTITUTION:Incident light S1 in a random polarized state is made incident on the core 20a of one quartz-based optical waveguide 20 and only propagated light in TE mode is passed through the 1st TE-mode passing filter 21 and made incident on the Faraday rotator 30. Here, the light has the plane of polarization rotated clockwise by 45 deg. and is made incident on the waveguide type reciprocal mode converting circuit 22, where the light has the plane of polarization rotated counterclockwise by 45 deg. to become the propagated light in TE mode in the same polarized state with the propagated light passed through the 1st filter 21; and the light is passed through the 2nd TE-mode passing filter 23 as it is and projected from the other end surface as projection light S0. Even if there is return light SR in a random polarized state from the opposite direction, this light is not projected from the optical isolator.
