摘要： PURPOSE:To produce 3,9-bis(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl)-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro [5.5]undecane in improved purity and yield and in a reduced amount of wasted water by reacting pentaerythritol with hydroxypivalaldehyde. CONSTITUTION:Pentaerythritol is reacted with hydroxypivalaldehyde in an organic solvent such as xylene or toluene at a temperature of 40-80 deg.C to obtain the objective compound. For example, the mixture of the pentaerythritol with the organic solvent is heated to a temperature of 40-80 deg.C and subsequently dropwisely mixed with the aqueous solution of the hydroxypivalaldehyde and the aqueous solution of an acid catalyst. The mixture is subjected to the reaction for several hrs in the temperature of the range, and subsequently the obtained slurry-like mixture is filtered, washed and dried to obtain the objective compound.

The 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidylated phosphorus compound of the formula, i.e., an N-methylated 2,2,6,6- tetramethylpiperidylated phosphorus compound is superior to 2,2,6,6- tetramethylpiperidylated phosphorus compounds hitherto used as stabilizing agents in the effect of imparting weatherability.

CONSTITUTION:A polyolefinic resin (e.g. polyethylene) is mixed with a phosphite compound of formula I (wherein R and R are each H or 1-9C alkyl; R is H, halogen, 1-9C alkyl or a group of formula II or III; and R and R are each H or 1-3C alkyl) (e.g. a compound of formula IV) suitably in an amount of about 0.01-5 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. polyolefinic resin. The compound of formula I can be produced by, e.g. reacting a corresponding phenyl dihalophosphite with 4-hydroxy-1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine. Because of the use of a compound having a methyl group introduced into the 2,2,6,6- tetramethyl-4-piperidyl group at the 1-position, the weatherability is improved as compared with the case wherein the conventional compound unsubstituted at the 1-position is used.
