    • PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of the crack in the covering refractories of a lance for stirring a molten metal and to extend the life of the lance in the stage of using said lance by heat-insulating or heating the lance after the treatment. CONSTITUTION:A molten metal is stirred and refined by using a lance 3 for stirring a molten metal consisting of a metallic pipe 7 having a gas passage hole 7' and refractories 8 covering the outside circumference thereof. The lance 3 drawn into the atmosphere after the treatment is housed into a heat insulating vessel 10. The vessel 10 consists of a shell 11 and a heat insulating material 12 and is provided with a burner 15 for heating. The lance 3 is thus insulated in terms of heat and if necessary the lance is heated to prevent the decrease in the surface temp. of the lance 3 and to decrease the temp. difference between the inside and outside surface of the refractories 8, by which the generation of the crack and stripping in the refractories 8 is prevented and the service life of the lance 3 is extened.

CONSTITUTION:A molten metal is stirred and refined by using a lance 3 for stirring a molten metal consisting of a metallic pipe 7 having a gas passage hole 7, and refractories 8 which cover the outside circumference of said pipe and of which the part corresponding to a slag line and the part at the bottom end are formed larger in outside diameter than the other parts. Mist is sprayed in the pipe 7 after said treatment to prevent the temp. rise of the lance 3. The mist spraying is preferably accomplished by spraying mist of about 50-100 gas- water ratio by a small diameter full cone tip to cool efficiently the pipe. The difference in thermal expansion between the refractories 8 and the pipe 7 is thus decreased and the generation of the crack and peeling in the refractories and the bend, etc. of the pipe 7 is prevented, whereby the service life of the laence 3 is extended.

CONSTITUTION:A lance 3 for stirring a molten metal formed by covering a metallic pipe 7 having a gas passage hole 7' with refractories 8 is immersed in the molten iron 4 in a ladle 1 and gas and a flux are blown therein to generate gas bubbling 6, whereby the molten iron 4 is stirred and refined. Liquefied gas is fed into the lance 3 from the upper or lower part thereof after the treatment to cool the lance, by which the difference in thermal expansion between the pipe 7 and the refractories 8 is decreased and the generation of the crack and stripping in the refractories 8 and the bend, etc. of the pipe 7 is prevented. N2, O2, air, Ar or the like is used as the liquefied gas. Ar or the like heavier than air is fed into the pipe 7 from the upper part and N2 or the like lighter than air is fed therein from the lower part.

CONSTITUTION:Gas contg. 40-100vol% non-oxidative gas such as Ar, N2 or the like and/or reducing gas such as CO, methane, propane or the like is used as the stirring gas to be blown after the mid-period of blowing in a combined blowing method wherein oxygen is top blown with an upper lance 7 to the molten iron 5 and slag 6 in a converter 1 consisting of a shell 2 and refractories 3 and the stirring gas is blown from the tuyere 4 in the bottom, whereby the wear of the tuyere 4 is suppressed while the cost of the stirring gas is taken into consideration and the service life of the tuyere is made at least equivalent to the life of the converter. It is further preferable for the decreased temp. of the tuyere 4 hence decreased wear thereof to increase the cooling capacity by blowing the stirring gas to be blown after the mid-period of blowing at a rate of 1-3 times the rate of blowing before the mid-period of blowing.
