    • PURPOSE:To shorten curing time to a great extent by applying voltage to each pole plate grid and paste so as to be positive and negative respectively in polarity in a curing process for each pole plate of a lead-acid battery in which lead powder whose degree of oxidation is equal to or more than 75%, is used as active raw material. CONSTITUTION:When each pole plate having sufficient performance through curing in a short time is manufactured, voltage is applied to each pole pate grid and paste so as to be positive and negative respectively in polarity. Namely, positive electrode paste is formed by an usual method by using lead powder whose degree of oxidation is different, the paste thus formed is filled in each grid of a lead battery for a vehicle, it is then cured at a temperature of 50 deg.C and at 98% relative humidity for two hours thereafter, counter electrodes 2 are inserted into each space between the pole pates 1 which are stretched over a frame 3, during curing, and voltage is applied to each pole plate grid and paste so as to be positive and negative respectively in polarity, so that the surface of each grid is thereby oxidized. For example, 1V is applied to a space between each pole plate and each counter electrode 2 while current is limited to 1A. By this constitution, curing time can thereby be shortened, and adhesion between each grid and active material can also be enhanced.

    • PURPOSE:To increase the safety in overdischarge and to stabilize the voltage in the final stage of discharge by making the capacity of a lithium electrode larger twice or more than that of a carbon electrode to limit the capacity of a battery by the carbon electrode. CONSTITUTION:In an electrode group formed by spirally winding a carbon electrode 1 and a lithium electrode 2 with a separator 3 interposed, the theoretical capacity calculated based on the lithium weight of the lithium electrode 2 is made larger twice or more than that calculated based on the volume of the carbon electrode 1 and the weight of carbon black to limit the capacity of a battery by the carbon electrode 1. In the battery having the electrode constitution in which the capacity is limited by the carbon electrode instead of the theoretical maximum capacity, the voltage in the final discharge stage steadily and smoothly drops, and no rapture of the battery arrises even when overdischarge is continued after polarity is converted, and safety is increased.

    • PURPOSE:To decrease electrical loss to increase power output by installing a plurality of output terminals in a metal cover of a sealed type battery, and electrically connecting these terminals to an anode or cathode with a plurality of connecting terminals. CONSTITUTION:An anode and a cathode are stacked with a glass fiber separator interposed between them, and they are wound around the center axis to form an electrode plate group 1. The plate group 1 is accommodated into a can 2 which also serves as an anode terminal. The can 2 is sealed with a metal cover 3a to which output terminals 5a-1 and 5a-2 are fixed with a hermetic seal 4. The terminals 5a-1 and 5a-2 are connected to equally divided portions of the cathode in the plate group 1 with connecting terminals 6a-1 and 6a-2. By this manner, a sealed type lithium-thionyl battery is fabricated. By installing a plurality of output terminals, electric loss is decreased, and discharge voltage and duration in high rate discharge are improved.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of the airtightness of the sealing section formed by sealing the liquid supply hole of a lithium-oxyhalide battery by screwing a vis having a needle-like pointed end into the threaded section of a pipe-like terminal used as the liquid supply hole. CONSTITUTION:When sealing the liquid supply hole of a battery can 5 used as a negative terminal in the process of manufacturing a battery containing lithium as a negative active material and an oxyhalide as a positive active material, a pipe-like terminal 2 having a threaded section in its top end and used as a liquid supply hole is attached to a ceramic hermetic seal 4 for insulating a pipe-like terminal 2 used as a positive terminal from the battery can 5. After electrolyte pouring is completed, a vis 1 having a needle-like pointed end is screwed into the threaded section to seal the liquid supply hole and then the vis 1 is fixed by a resin 3. By the means mentioned above, the pipe-like terminal 2 and the liquid supply hole are unified together and the complete airtightness of the sealing section is achieved, thereby improving the reliability of the sealing.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the close contact between the plate and the electrolyte- holding body by preparing the electrolyte-holding body from a glass powder or short fibers which can conform to the irregular surface of the plate. CONSTITUTION:Glass is used as a material for an electrolyte-holding body because dilute sulfuric acid is used as electrolyte. It is used in the form of a powder or short fibers of several millimeter length so that the electrolyte-holding body conforms to the irregular surface of the plate after a binder contained in the plate is dissolved by electrolyte poured. A water-soluble binder such as corn starch is used as the binder. The content of the binder in the electrolyte-holding body is adjusted to about 5%. When performing the molding of a mixture composed of a glass powder or short glass fiber and the binder, a pressure of at least 20kg/(dm) is applied to the mixture. By the means mentioned above, it is possible to improve the close adhesion between the plate and the electrolyte- holding body. Furthermore, it is not necessary to apply a high pressure during electrolyte puring and it is possible to use a container of a decreased strength.
