    • PURPOSE:To make display of red disk colors so that the multicolor display is attained by specifying the product of the refractive index anisotropy and panel thickness of a nematic liquid crystal to a specific range. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystal materials of a phase transfer type which are different in the product DELTAn.d of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn and the panel thickness d are prepd. The hues in the display colors when a driving voltage is impressed are a linear relation when the relation is plotted by taking the DELTAn.d at the abscissa and the hue H deg. at the ordinate. The DELTAn.d of the range where the hue H deg. shows the red system colors (5R to 2.5RP hues in the Munsell system) shows an 800 to 950nm range. The product DELTAn.d of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn and panel thickness d of the nematic liquid crystal is merely necessitated to be specified in the 800 to 950nm range in this way if the red system colors are desired to be obtd. as the colors to be projected and displayed. Since the display of the red system colors having a complementary color relation with a green is executed, the display of a black is possible as well. The multicolor display is thus obtd.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the active diffraction grating which can be controlled electrically by making at least one surface of a transparent plate irregular in parallel stripes. CONSTITUTION:On a substrate 1, a transparent electrode 2 is provided and driven by a voltage source 4, but the surface of one of two substrates 1 or the transparent electrode 2 on the substrate 1 is made irregular in periodical stripes to generate a slight difference in panel thickness. An electric field E(x) applied to liquid crystal when a voltage V is applied between the electrodes of the panel because of the slight difference in panel thickness is represented as E(x)=V/d(x). Here, d(x) is the distance between the transparent electrodes and even if the same voltage V is applied according to the irregularity of the panel, the electric field E(x) applied to the liquid crystal is different. When a sufficiently high voltage is applied, the entire surface of the liquid crystal enters a nematic phase, but when the voltage drops, liquid crystal molecules go to parallel to the substrate selectively where the electric field is weak in recessed parts and spiral axes are arrayed in a specific direction to enable diffracted light to be converged on a specific position, so that the diffracted light and transmitted light can be switched with the voltage.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce cost and to save electric power consumption by using the dielectric layer formed on a glass substrate by mounting the glass substrate to a vapor deposition device at the specified angle between the perpendicular line of the vapor deposition source and the glass substrate and executing diagonal vapor deposition of a dielectric material as a liquid crystal oriented film. CONSTITUTION:The dielectric layer of SiO, MgF2, MgO, etc., formed on the glass substrate 1 by mounting the glass substrate 1 on the vapor deposition device 5 in such a manner that the angle between the perpendicular line of the vapor deposition source 4 and the glass substrate 1 attains 5-30 deg. and execut ing the diagonal vapor deposition of the dielectric material. The restoration time of liquid crystal molecules when the voltage between transparent electrodes is removed, therefore, increases and the ratio between the rise time and the fall time with the liquid crystal display element of a PAC system is enlarged. The characteristics equal to the characteristics of a CRT are obtd. in this way and the reduction of the cost and the saving of the electric power consump tion are attained.
