摘要： PURPOSE:To enhance display resolution with the same electrical effect as N-number scanning electrodes by combining matrix of P-number sets of N-number scanning electrodes in a plane and making Q-number sets of matrixes multi-layer to increase the number of scanning electrodes to P x Q x N. CONSTITUTION:Al linkage conduction part 11 is generated on glass plate 16 and is covered with SiO2 thick film 13, and square elecrodes 12 are arranged vertically and horizontally regularly and are laminated. Electrode 12 is connected to Y direction electrodes Y 1 and Y 1 alternately by through hole 14. The first Y direction electrode Y1 is constituted by electrodes Y 1 and Y 1. X direction electrode 15 is constituted into a band shape. These electrodes are covered with layer such as interface activating materials and SiO2 evaporation film. Linkage conduction part 11 is made narrow with a range of no influence of voltage drop and is prevented from being visible from the outside. Thus, electrodes 12 are linked alternately to increase effectively the number of electrodes up to 3N or more easily. As a result, a display element with a superior contrast, a high response time and a high resolution can be produced.

To drive this unit, only segments to be erased in the next display pattern are driven for the 1st constant-voltage erasing for tens m sec.-hundreds m sec. before write operation and then, only segment to be written in the next display pattern are driven for constant-voltage erasing for hundreds m sec. Further, only erasing segments in a new display pattern, i.e. erased segments are driven again for the constant-voltage erasing.
