    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly efficient method for producing a liquid fuel derived from biomass, and an apparatus therefor in which a thermal decomposition gas generated by thermal decomposition of vegetable biomass (wood, old fruit trees, rice straws, barley or wheat straws, woody fiber of tropical wood, oil palms, coconut husks, old gum trees, corncobs, waste paper, pulp, and wastes etc., thereof) is efficiently roughly fractionated into tar, acetic acid, water, etc., and recovered to recover high-quality fuel oil depending on the kind of a biomass raw material, and clogging of piping routes caused by nonvolatile components deposited from the thermal decomposition gas is further suppressed to allow continuous running operation. SOLUTION: The method for producing the liquid fuel derived from the biomass includes fractionating the thermal decomposition gas generated by the thermal decomposition of the biomass raw material in a plurality of stages, and producing the liquid fuel is provided. The method includes carrying out a thermal decomposition step of thermally decomposing the biomass raw material, and generating the thermal decomposition gas; and a fraction recovering step of recovering at least tar from the thermal decomposition gas just after the thermal decomposition step.       SOLUTION: The process for producing a liquid fuel using excess sludge as a raw material includes dehydrating and crushing excess sludge after subjecting the same to coagulation treatment using a polymer coagulant; putting the crushed product in water and agitating the same within a sedimentation tank; adding a coagulant to permit coagulation sedimentation and separate into three layers of an upper layer, an intermediate layer and a lower layer; subjecting the intermediate layer to a sequence of treatment to produce a liquid fats and oils-based material as a first material for mixing, a liquid starch-based material as a second material for mixing, a liquid protein-based material as a third material for mixing and a liquid cellulose-based material as a fourth material for mixing; mixing these materials; and finally emulsifying the resultant mixture, to produce a liquid fuel.
