    • PURPOSE:To enhance safety by moving a reflecting body corresponding to the operating time of a nuclear reactor and prescribing the max. moving position. CONSTITUTION:When the operation of a nuclear reactor is started, a synchronous motor 21 is operated by the generated power due to the nuclear reactor to rotate a ball screw shaft 19. By this mechanism, a drive rail 15 is gradually moved upwardly. A reflecting body 11 is raised along the rail 15 by supplying a current to a coil 31. The rail 15 is moved upwardly corresponding to the operating time of the nuclear reactor. Since there is no coil 31 above the rail 15, the reflecting body 11 can not moved upwardly from the rail 15. Further, the reflecting body 11 is moved to an arbitrary position within the range not exceeding the prescribed position by controlling the current allowed to flow to the coil 31. When the current allowed to flow to the coil 31 is controlled or cut off, the reflecting body 11 falls under its own wt. and the nuclear reactor is stopped. The trouble of a motor 21 or a speed reducer brings about the stop of the movement of the rail 15 or the falling of the reflecting body 11 and high safety can be realized.

    • PURPOSE:To increase burnup and to improve fuel economy by decreasing a difference in reactivity during the operation and shut-down of a nuclear reactor and increasing the reactivity during the operation. CONSTITUTION:The top end of a neutron moderating pipe 6 filled internally with an inert gas is closed and a communicating hole 4 for opening the bottom part is provided thereto. An internal piping 7 running through the top end and bottom end of the neutron moderating pipe is provided and a moderator is passed in this piping 7. Fins 8 for steam condensation are provided in the upper part. Double pipes or an internal pipe provided with a spray part in the upper part which is not the through-piping 7 is equally satisfactory. The inert gas is thereby compressed by cooling water and the neutron is moderated over the entire length of the fuel rod during the normal operation. The average density in the pipe is decreased during the shut-down of the reactor. The difference in the reactivity during the shut-down and the operation is thereby eliminated and, therefore, the uranium to water ratio during the operation is increased and the reactivity during the operation is improved; in addition, there are no moving parts and, therefore, the reliability is enhanced.
