The maximum value and the minimum value of the smooth power spectrum between the specified frequencies are extracted. The difference between the maximum value and the minimum value as the statistic variate is obtained.

摘要： PURPOSE:To facilitate stable modulation/demodulation of a frequency by a method wherein the oscillation output laser beam of a semiconductor laser device is subjected to frequency modulation. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor laser device 1 is made to oscillate by the supply of a current exceeding a threshold. An electromagnetic wave whose intensity is modulated by a signal from a signal source 4 is applied to the active region of the oscillating semiconductor laser device 1 to change the effective resonator length of a laser resonator which is composed of the semiconductor device 1 and the frequency of the oscillation output laser beam of the semiconductor laser device 1 is modulated by the electromagnetic wave whose intensity is modulated by the signal from the signal source 4. Further, the oscillation output laser beam is divided into two and the two divided beams are made to pass through respective two light paths having different light path lengths and then synthesized again to make the two beams interfere each other. With this process, the beam component having the same frequency as the frequency of the electromagnetic wave contained in the intensity change created in the synthesized laser beam is demodulated and outputted as a signal. With this constitution, the frequency of a semiconductor laser beam whose spectrum width is not narrow and whose oscillation frequency is not stable can be modulated/demodulated stably.
