    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely measure an NOx gas in an H2 O-containing atmosphere by leading out an oxygen gas from a flow passage through a ceramic body after a gas to be measured containing NOx is introduced to the flow passage and applying a voltage across electrodes on the surface of the ceramic body within such an extent that the H2 O in the residual gas is not dissociated. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas is made to flow in a measurement chamber 2 through a diffusing hole 1 and an oxygen ion pump cell 6 pumps out the oxygen in the exhaust gas within such an extent that NOx resolution does not take place. At the time of pumping out the oxygen, the partial pressure of oxygen in the chamber 2 is controlled to a fixed level by driving the pump cell 6 based on signals from oxygen partial pressure detecting electrodes 7-a and 7-b. Concentration-controlled O2 and NOx flow in another measurement chamber 4 from the chamber 2 through a diffusion hole 3. When another oxygen ion pump cell 8 pumps out the oxygen in the chamber 4, the oxygen concentration in the chamber 8 drops and the NOx in the chamber 4 is resolved into N2 and O2 due to the catalytic actions of electrodes. Therefore, when the value of the current flowing to the cell 8 is measured, the concentration of the NOx gas can be measured.
