    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bleaching auxiliary that achieves an extremely high bleaching efficiency and easily provides pulp having a high brightness. SOLUTION: The bleaching auxiliary is used for bleaching cellulose pulp with chlorine dioxide and comprises an organic acid (A) and/or its salt. The organic acid (A) is preferably an aminocarboxylic acid (A1) and/or an oxycarboxylic acid (A2). The bleaching auxiliary preferably comprises further a water-soluble polymer (B) having a solubility parameter of 14-24 and/or a surfactant (C) having a HLB of 6-18. The surfactant (C) is at least one kind selected from the group consisting of a nonionic surfactant (C1), an anionic surfactant (C2) containing at least one of a sulfo group, a sulfoxy group and a phosphono group and an amphoteric surfactant (C3).     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the multistep bleaching treatment of pulp comprising carrying out an acid treatment of the pulp followed by bleaching the resultant pulp with chlorine dioxide or chlorine in improved efficiency to obtain high-whiteness pulp or reduce the total amount of a bleaching chemicals to be used.
      SOLUTION: The multistep bleaching treatment of pulp including the acid treatment involves the following step: The acid-treated pulp is bleached with chlorine dioxide at such an initial pH as to be neutral or weakly alkaline, specifically at pH 5-10, more preferably at pH 6-9, thus improving the bleaching efficiencies of both the treatments respectively.
