    • PURPOSE:To form a small-sized optical fiber type coupler with low insertion loss by jointing side surfaces of a couple of semicylindrical optical fibers which have respectively one side surface of a clad part removed almost to a core part. CONSTITUTION:The clad part 12 which has a low refractive index and surrounds the core part 11 having a high refractive index is removed in parallel to a core axis almost to the core part 11. Nearly semicylindrical optical fibers 10 are used. Namely, said optical fibers 10 are jointed mutually with one over the other to length l in the side surfaces where the clad parts are removed. (The overlap part may be coated with a glass capillary.) In this case, said nearly semicylindrical optical fibers 10 are formed easily by polishing one side of a base material consisting of a core 16 and a clad 15 into a surface 17 parallel to the core center axis and then drawing the obtained nearly semicylindrical base material at about 2,100 deg.C.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a simple optical switch which is small-sized and has a small number of parts, by constituting so that an optical fiber is deformed by electrostatic power and is coupled selectively with the other optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A V-groove 4 is formed in parallel with an axis (y) on a conductive substrate 3, and the whole surface is covered with an insulating film 9. An optical fiber 2 whose clad surface is covered with an insulating thin film 10 is fixed in the V-groove 4. An optical fiber 1 whose clad surface is covered with a conductive film 8 is fixed by a jig 7 in the vertically upper part along the V- groove 4. When voltage is impressed between the substrate 3 and the conductive film 8 of the optical fiber 1 through a changeover switch, the optical fiber 1 is attracted and fixed in the V-groove 4 by electrostatic attraction and is connected with the optical fiber 2. Since an electromagnet is not used, a simple optical switch which is small-sized and has a small number of parts is obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a matrix optical switch of low loss and low crosstalk by combining single polarization fibers for forming 1/2 wavelength plates and fiber type polarizers of which the respective lengths satisfy prescribed conditions. CONSTITUTION:The intersected points of the matrix of N lines and M lines formed of inlet optical fibers 11 connected to respectively 1 line M rows of branch circuits and exit optical fibers 14 connected to N lines 1 row of branch circuits are constituted of single polarization fibers 12 of the 1/2 wavelength plates of which the respective lengths (l) satisfy the conditions of the equation I and fiber type polarizers 13 of which the carrying axes coincide with said fibers. If the fibers 12 are turned 45 deg., the directions of the linear polarization of the incident light and the exit light are made in the same directions having 90 deg. from each other, so that the incident light and the exit light are switched without space release. The matrix optical switch of low loss and low crosstalk suited for a coherent optical communication system is thus obtained. In the equation, betas, betaf are the phase constants of the two polarization modes of the single polarization fibers and (m) is an integer.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the titled base material with low loss and low dispersion over a wide wavelength region by forming a porous glass layer contg. fluorine for the 1st clad and a porous glass layer for the 2nd clad around a porous glass body for a core and converting them into transparent glass by heating. CONSTITUTION:SiCl2 and GeCl4 are fed into a torch 1 for synthesizing fine glass particles for a core together with a carrier gas such as He, SiCl2, POCl3 and SF6 are fed into a torch 2 for synthesizing fine glass particles for the 1st clad together with a carrier gas, and SiCl4 is fed into a torch 3 for synthesizing fine glass particles for the 2nd clad together with a carrier gas. They are subjected to flame hydrolysis to form fine glass particles, and a porous glass body is grown from the particles. The body is then heated to 1,500 deg.C in an atmosphere of He and Cl2 and coverted into transparent glass by dehydration. Thus, a base material for an optical fiber with a Q type refractive index distribution can be manufactured, and this optical fiber has the advantage of low-dispersion transmission in a wide wavelength region.
