    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the end of a medium, in an apparatus which detects the temperature of the medium.SOLUTION: A printer 20 determine the temperatures of two or more places including a heated printing medium S by use of its temperature sensor 50. The printer detects the end of the printing medium S based on the determined temperatures of the two or more places by utilizing the temperature difference between a platen 40 and the printing medium S. The temperature sensor 50 may be provided on a print head 24 that is moved in a main scanning direction. The end of the printing medium S may be detected by utilizing the temperature difference between the platen 40 and the printing medium S. A construction may also be adopted in which, in the platen 40, a groove portion 42 is formed along the main scanning direction of the print head 24 and the temperature sensor 50 determines the temperature of a portion above the groove portion 42.

      SOLUTION: In the printing apparatus 101, after a rolled sheet 1 is forwarded in the delivering direction, it is conveyed in the taking-up direction for printing to be performed. Then, when the end of the rolled sheet 1 is detected during the forwarding operation of the rolled sheet 1, discrimination is conducted if the length in the conveying direction is less than X, wherein X represents a length in the sub-scanning direction of an image to be printed. If the length in the conveying direction is discriminated as less than X, the rolled sheet 1 is retreated from the conveyance path as printing is impossible. Also, if the length in the conveying direction is discriminated as X or longer, the printed matter is half cut.
