    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical duobinary optical transmission apparatus which is realized by using a modulator without buffer layer whose manufacturing costs are low and whose manufacturing process is simple as compared with a modulator with a buffer layer.
      SOLUTION: The duobinary optical transmission apparatus is composed of a light source which outputs a carrier wave, a duobinary encoder which codes an inputted NRZ (Non Return to Zero) electrical signal, a low-pass filter which changes the coded signal into a 3-level electrical signal and an optical intensity modulator which modulates the phase and the optical intensity of the carrier wave according to the 3-level electrical signal and outputs a 2-level optical duobinary signal. The optical intensity modulator is provided with a substrate, an optical waveguide which is formed on the substrate and an X-cut optical intensity modulator which is provided with electrodes for applying an electric field to the optical waveguide.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of dependency caused by a pattern length and a bias position of a Mach-Zhender modulator by removing defect of existing duobinary optical transmitters.
      SOLUTION: The duobinary optical transmitter includes: a precoder 210 for coding an electrical signal of binary data; a continuous-wave (CW) light source 230 for generating a CW light; an optical phase modulator 240 for modulating the phase of an optical signal from the CW light source 230 according to an electrical signal outputted from the precoder 210; a birefringent element 250 for applying time delay depending on a polarized state of an input optical signal to an optical signal outputted from the optical phase modulator 240; and a polarizer 260 for permitting only optical signals of a specific polarization direction to transmit therethrough when optical signals outputted from the birefringent element 250 are applied.
