    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hard metal superior in wear resistance and fracture resistance by enhancing its hardness without lowering the toughness, and to provide a cutting tool having the long life. SOLUTION: The hard metal 1 includes 5-7 mass% cobalt and/or nickel, 0-10 mass% of at least one compound selected from a predetermined carbide, nitride and carbonitride, and the balance tungsten carbide; and is formed by bonding a hard phase which mainly includes tungsten carbide particles and includes a β particle of at least one compound selected from the carbide and the like, with a binder phase which mainly includes the cobalt and the like. The hard phase has an average particle diameter of 0.6-1.0 μm, a saturation magnetization of 9-12 μTm 3 /kg, a coercive force of 15-25 kA/m and an oxygen content of 0.045 mass% or less.
