    • PURPOSE:To improve the quality of a composite signal by varying the pulse intervals of a driving signal, subframe by subframe, so that subframes which include important information or much information one fine and other subframes are rough. CONSTITUTION:A frame of the driving signal are divided into equal-length or unequal-length subframes, the driving signal consists of an equal-interval pulse train which differ in pulse interval, subframe by subframe, and information on the amplitude of the pulse string or the amplitude and phase of the pulse train is stored as vectors in a code book 240 previously. Then a composite filter 180 is driven with the driving signal generated based upon the information to obtain the composite signal and vectors in the code book 240 are selected and encoded so that the power of the error signal between the composite signal and an input signal becomes minimum. Namely, the pulse intervals of the driving signal are so varied that subframes containing important information or much information are fine and other subframes are rough. Consequently, the quality of the composite signal is improved.
