    • PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance useful as an intermediate of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, or organic synthesis, without troubles of waste treatment, and enabling the reuse of the catalyst, by reacting a fatty acid with bromine in the presence of the acid halide of said fatty acid or α-brominated fatty acid halide.
      CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula III is prepared by reacting the fatty acid of formula I (R is H, 1W9C aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or aromatic hydrocarbon radical), e.g. isovaleric acid, with bromine in the presence of the compound of formula II (Y is H or Br; X is Br or Cl), e.g. isovaleryl chloride. The amount of the compound of formula II to be added is 0.05W100mol% of the fatty acid used as the raw material. As an concrete example, a halogenating agent is added to the starting fatty acid to convert a part of the fatty acid to the fatty acid halide, to which bromine is added to obtain the objective product. As an alternative method, separately prepared fatty acid halide is added to the starting fatty acid, and the bromination is carried out using said fatty acid halide as the catalyst.
