An amount of P, Sb, As promoting deposition of this film-state carbide is specified. An amount of Al, N, Mo, B, Nb, V having an effect fine dispersing the carbide is specified. An existence frequency of oxide system inclusion of 13 μm or more harmful for a corrosive fatigue life is specified, and an amount of O and S of element thereof is specified. A hermetic seal is mounted for suppressing infiltration of solid foreign matter, a roller of 20 mm or more is used for the rolling unit. For maintaining surface hardness of the rolling surface, a residual austenite amount is specified.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a disk and a power roller. SOLUTION: This toroidal type continuously variable transmission is constituted of an input shaft 3, an input side disk 1, an output side disk 2, a plurality of trunnions 10 and 11, a plurality of power rollers 7a and 7b, and a thrust roller bearing. The opposite inside surfaces of the both input side and output side disks are made into arc recessed cross-sectional shapes, circumferential surfaces of the respective power rollers 7a and 7b are made into spherical projecting surfaces, and the circumferential surfaces and the inside surfaces are made to abut to each other. This transmission is characterized in that, at least, one of the recessed surface of the input side disk 1, recessed surface of the output side disk 2, the projecting surfaces of the power rollers 7a and 7b, a track surface of an inner ring of a power roller bearing, and a track surface of an outer ring of the power roller bearing is ground, subjected to the superfinishing after the heat treatment, subjected to shot peening and subjected to the superfinishing, and the surface residual compression stress is -780--1800 MPa.
