摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has no increase in the number of processes but is excellent in a visual angle. SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display device wherein a liquid crystal layer is held between two sheets of substrates 23, 33, and two or more sorts of minute areas coexist in the liquid crystal layer, in order to provide a liquid crystal display excellent in a visual angle, the liquid crystal display device is to be so arranged that at least one substrate 23 has an electrode 22 having an opening part 24 thereon and a second electrode 25 is provided at the position of the opening part 24 for controlling initial orientation of the liquid crystal 11, and the liquid crystal is aligned vertical to the substrate at the side of one substrate, but aligned horizontal to the substrate at the side of the other substrate. In this case, an optical correction plate can be mounted between the substrate and a polarizing plate. Moreover, on this liquid crystal display device, it is possible to control and drive the initial orientation of the liquid crystal by impressing a voltage across a 2nd electrode and its counter electrode and generating a diagonal electric field. A voltage is impressed across the 2nd electrode and the counter electrode to generate the diagonal electric field for controlling the initial alignment, and a liquid crystal display device storing this alignment by polymerizing a small amount of monomer or oligomer mixed with the liquid crystal is manufactured.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device small in the coloring of a picture caused by the change in a visual angle direction and excellent in a picture quality. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is based on a lateral electric field system and has two subregions in a pixel region. The initial orientation bearings of liquid crystal molecules 21 in the first and the second subregions 1 and 2 are made mutually different by 90 degrees. When a voltage is applied, the liquid crystal molecules in each of the subregions are constituted so as to rotate in a same rotational direction while the orientation bearings are maintained mutually in a relation of 90 degrees. Furthermore, the initial orientation bearings of the liquid crystal molecules in the first and the second subregions 1 and 2 are the same and when a voltage is applied, the liquid crystal molecules 21 in each of the subregions are constituted so as to rotate in a reversed direction while maintaining the orientation bearings to mutually symmetrical relation.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the liquid crystal display device which is superior in visual angle characteristics and contrast, and to provide its manufacturing method and driving method. SOLUTION: This device has plural pixels having liquid crystal layers of nematic liquid crystal sandwiched between two substrates. Then this device features the coexistence of four fine areas A, B, C, and D which are fine areas differing in the twist direction of liquid crystal and fine areas differing in the rising direction of liquid crystal molecules. Specially, two areas where liquid crystal twists in the same direction and rise in different directions are not in line contact on a virtual plane. Further, the liquid crystal layers contains macromolecules to stabilize the four areas. The liquid crystal display device which is superior in visual angle dependency and has high contrast can be manufactured through a simple process similar to a conventional process.

摘要： PURPOSE:To produce a polymer liquid crystal composite film without limited by properties of a liquid crystal material to be used, and to improve characteristics such as to obtain low driving voltage, high response speed and low hysteresis by preliminarily treating a porous polymer thin film with a chemical modifying agent. CONSTITUTION:A polymer composite film is formed by dispersing fine particles in a polymer material having reactive groups, and then the film is treated with a solvent which dissolves the fine particles but does not dissolve the polymer material so that the fine particles are removed to obtain a porous polymer thin film 1. The surface of the porous polymer thin film 1 is modified by coupling reaction of a chemical modifying agent 3 having groups which can be bonded with the reactive groups so that surface characteristics of the polymer are controlled. Then a liquid crystal material 6 is injected into circular openings in the thin film. The polymer having reactive groups is obtd. by using monomers or oligomers having chemically reactive groups or a mixture of these. As for the chemical modifying agent, any material may be used as far as it can modify the surface of the polymer material.

摘要： PURPOSE:To provide a response speed of millisecond order by using a liquid crystal optical element of a phase grating type and to provide optical responsiveness in spite of non-polarization by separating a liquid crystal layer by transparent solid materials. CONSTITUTION:The transparent solid materials 11 and liquid crystal materials 12 are alternately and regularly arranged between two sheets of substrates 14a and 14b having transparent electrodes 13a, 13b. The liquid crystal layer is separated by the transparent solid materials 11 and do not form a continuous layer. The counter electrodes 13a, 13b are tightly fixed to the diffraction grating having a rectangular section to produce a liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal materials 12 are value along the grooves of the diffraction grating. The transparent substrates facing each other are tightly fixed to the transparent solid materials 11 on the substrates and are subjected to exposing and developing to form the diffraction grating. The liquid crystal materials 12 are injected along the grooves of the diffraction grating. Further, a prepolymer is introduced between two sheets of the fixed substrates 14a and 14b and is polymerized to a transparent solid between the substrates; thereafter, the exposing and developing are executed to form the diffraction grating. The liquid crystal materials 12 are injected into the grooves of the diffraction grating.

SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal optical device having a light-controlling layer 61 containing a liquid crystal material 31 dispersed in a matrix resin 41, at least one hole (or groove) 51 is formed, in the depth direction of the light-controlling layer 61, in the display pixel in the layer 61. In this invention, because a hologram film consisting of only a polymer is preliminarily formed, an electrode layer such as an ITO layer can be formed between the light-controlling layers without using a substrate. By forming a hole or groove for every pixel, a depolymerization type resist material can be easily removed, a wall-type electrode layer for contact to a TFT can be formed, and a liquid crystal material can be easily injected. As for the liquid crystal material, any material can be selected, and since the liquid crystal material does not dissolve in the polymer, decrease in the difference in the refractive index from the polymer is prevented and high reflectance is obtained. Moreover, because the liquid crystal material is injected to every display pixel, a device having a large area can be easily obtained.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal optical element having low driving voltage, excellent hysteresis properties and high reflectance and further to provide a liquid crystal optical element capable of multi-color display with one display picture element. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal optical element comprises a liquid crystal layer consisting essentially of liquid crystalline material 6 and interposed between a substrate 2 and 9 each having an electrode treated in such a manner that the liquid crystalline material is aligned vertically. A small quantity of a polymer material 5 is dispersed in the liquid crystal layer. When voltage is not applied on the element, the element is transparent because all the liquid crystalline material 6 is aligned in the vertical direction. When the voltage is applied on the element, the liquid crystalline material 6 tends to be aligned in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the electric field because the liquid crystalline material 6 has negative dielectric anisotropy whereas a portion of the liquid crystalline material 6 can not move because of restriction by the polymer material 5. Because the polymer material 5 is dispersed periodically, light having a wavelength caused by the period is selectively reflected.
