    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame-retardant polyester good in color tone and useful for the clothing field and industrial area by carrying out a polycondensation reaction through adding each specific organophosphorus compound and unsaturated aliphatic compound at specified amounts, respectively. SOLUTION: This flame-retardant polyester comprising or predominant in polyethylene terephthalate is obtained by conventional polycondensation process; during the process, such an amount of an organophosphorus compound of formula I (R is a 1-12C alkyl or aryl; R and R are each a 1-18C alkyl, aryl, monohydroxyalkyl or H; A is a bivalent alkylene) such as (2-carboxyethyl)me thylphosphinic acid as to be 500-30,000 ppm in the phosphorus atom content of the final polyester and 0.01-0.5 molar times, based on the organophosphorus compound, of an unsaturated aliphatic compound of formula II (R is a bivalent 2-12C aliphatic group having an unsaturated bond on the main or side chain; X and Y are each hydroxyl or carboxyl) such as maleic acid are added to the reaction system. Preferably, both the organophosphorus compound and the unsaturated aliphatic compound are used in the form of an ethylene glycol solution heat-treated in advance.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a flame-retardant polyester at a high productivity at a low cost by conducting esterification or transesterification in the presence of an organophosphorus compound in a specified amount in terms of phosphorus and an unsaturated aliphatic compound in a specified amount based on the organophosphorus compound. SOLUTION: The esterification or transesterification of at least one dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid) and at least one glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol) is conducted at 250 deg.C or higher in the presence of an organophosphorus compound of the formula in such an amount that the phosphorus content in the resultant polyester is 500 ppm or higher and an unsaturated aliphatic compound of the formula: X1-R4-X2 (e.g. itaconic acid) is in an amount of 0.9-1.2 mol per mol of the organophosphorus compound. Then, a catalyst (e.g. antimony dioxide) is added to the reaction system, which is then subjected to polycondensation at 220-290 deg.C to give a polyester. In the formulas, R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-12C hydrocarbon group; R4 is a 2-12C alkylene group having an unsaturated bond on the side chain or on the main chain; and X1 and X2 are each hyroxyl or carboxyl.
