    • PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in high purity and facilitate the recovery of the product after completion of the reaction, by reaction between a diamine and an aromatic tricarboxylic anhydride under specified temperature conditions virtually in the absence of both solvent and dispersion medium. CONSTITUTION: This bisdicarboximide of formula I (Ar is a trivalent aromatic group; X is a C-contg. divalent group), is obtained by reaction between a diamine of formula II (e.g. hexamethylenediamine) and an aromatic tricarboxylic anhydride (e.g. trimellitic anhydride) virtually in the absence of both solvent and dispersion medium. Specifically, the reaction is conducted by mixing the above two components at a temperature higher than the melting point of either of the two components (raw materials) (pref. at 100-400 deg.C, esp. 150-300 deg.C). The compound of formula I is useful as a carboxylic acid raw material for varnishes or highly heat-resistant polymers such as polyamide-imides or polyester-imides.
