    • PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for polarizing plates and to obtain a high-brightness screen as well as to prevent the peeling between the boundaries of a liquid crystal layer by using a high-polymer dispersed liquid crystal for a liquid crystal panel and forming a transparent film between an ITO film constituting a counter electrode and the liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:Picture element electrodes 13, source signal lines 14, etc., are formed on an array substrate 12. The picture element electrodes 13 are formed of transparent electrodes, such as ITO. On the other hand, the counter electrode 15 formed on a counter electrode substrate 11 is also formed of a transparent electrode consisting of ITO, etc., in the same manner as for the picture element electrodes 13. The high- polymer dispersed liquid crystal 16 is crimped between the counter electrode 15 and the picture element electrodes 13. Thin films (transparent films) 17, 18 consisting of a transparent material are formed on the counter electrode 15 and the picture element electrodes 13. The transparent films 17, 18 are so formed that the film thickness d thereof attains about d=lambda/4/n when the central wavelength of the light to be modulated by the liquid crystal panel is designated as lambda and the refractive index of the thin films as n. In this case, the liquid crystal is a high-polymer dispersed liquid crystal and the film thickness thereof is 8 to 15mum.

    • PURPOSE:To greatly reduce incident light which travels straight in a panel by generating diffraction gratings when a high polymer dispersed liquid crystal is in scattered mode and to make the contrast high by making the diffraction gratings disappear and transmitting the incident light as it is when the high polymer dispersed liquid crystal is in transmission mode. CONSTITUTION:Counter electrode are formed in an interdigital shape. When the high polymer dispersed liquid crystal 17 is irradiated with ultraviolet rays and polymerized, an AC signal is applied between the interdigital counter electrodes 16a and 16b. Liquid crystal at part. A positioned between the interdigital counter electrodes 16a and 16b is oriented. Nearly no electric field is applied to liquid crystal at a part B and resin components of the liquid crystal are polymerized still in an oriented state. The refractive index na of the part A of the liquid crystal 17 is larger than the refractive index nb of the part B and the parts A and B which differ in refractive index form a repetitive pattern, so the function of the diffraction grating is obtained. When a voltage is applied between the counter electrodes 16a and 16b and a picture element electrode 13, the liquid crystal is oriented at the parts A and B, so na=nb and the diffraction grating disappears.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the panel which is high in contrast, light in weight and low in cost by forming projections consisting of insulators and a black matrix on the source signal lines of an array substrate, packing a high-polymer dispersed liquid crystal between the projections and forming a counter electrode on the upper layer thereof. CONSTITUTION:The projections 25 consisting of the insulators and the black matrix 24 are formed on the source signal lines 22 of the array substrate 11 and after a liquid crystal soln. is applied on the array substrate 11, a substrate having a release property is superposed on the liquid crystal soln. The panel is then pressurized successively from above the substrate and from the panel end in the direction parallel with the source signal lines 22 on the above substrate, by which the resin is smoothed to a plane shape. The liquid crystal soln. is then irradiated with UV rays, by which the resin in the liquid crystal is polymerized and cured to a polymer 21. The counter electrode 14 consisting of ITO and a protective thin film 15 are thereafter formed after the substrate is peeled. Then, there is no need for the counter substrate and the weight is reduced. In addition, the stage is simple and the liquid crystal panel is produced at a high speed. Further, the leakage of electric fields from the source signal 22 lines, etc., is shut off by the black matrix 24 and the extremely high-contrast images are displayed.
