SOLUTION: The charger 100 comprises DC/DC converters 105 and 106 and an AC/DC converter 109 serving as voltage conversion means, a microcomputer 112, an external selection means 113, and a charging current detection circuit 111. The microcomputer 112 selects a power supply to be used on the basis of a predetermined priority or a signal 11 from the external selection means 113 and turns only a corresponding voltage conversion means on. The voltage conversion means converts the power supply voltage into a desired voltage. The charging current detection circuit 111 detects the charging current and delivers a signal to the microcomputer 112. The microcomputer 112 delivers a constant current control signal to a voltage detection means and controls the charging current to a desired level depending on the voltage detection means.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery charger, capable of eliminating lack of charging because of charging running down early, resulting from the phenomenon of a temperature rise increases immediately after charging start, due to a temperature gradient between battery temperature and ambient temperature, when the ambient temperature is higher than the battery temperature, and of positively discriminating full charging.
      SOLUTION: This battery charger includes a battery temperature detecting means 2A which detects the battery temperature, a microcomputer 50 which computes and stores a temperature increase value ΔT per prescribed period, based on the output of the battery temperature detecting means 2A and stores a map, on which a charging current acceptable value is mapped capable of charging; while suppressing a temperature rise value of a battery, based on the battery temperature and the temperature rise value ΔT, and a cooling fan 6 which cools down the battery. The cooling fan 6 is activated for a prescribed period of time prior to a charging process, and the map is selected, based on whether or not a temperature rise value ΔT at that time is higher than the prescribed value.
