    • PURPOSE:To prevent any toxication of the cathode by making a sulfide gas to be adsorbed by an adsorption layer which contains a compound containing Li, Na or the like and which is installed inside the envelope of a fluorescent character display tube which includes a phosphor at least part of which consists of a sulfide phosphor. CONSTITUTION:A fluorescent character display tube is produced by installing an anodic part 6, which consists of a positive conductor 3 made of a transparent conductive film and a phosphor 5 which is fixed to the surface of the conductor 3 and at least part of which consists of a sulfide phosphor, on the inner surface of a base plate 1 and installing the anodic part 6, a control electrode 8 and a cathode 9 in an envelope 12. A getter 14 and a getter mirror 15 are also installed in the envelope 12. An adsorption layer 16 containing at least one compound containing Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs or Fr is formed on the inner surface of a back plate 11 so that a sulfide produced from the phosphor 5 is efficiently adsorbed by the layer 16. Due to the above structure, it is possible to achieve improved emission by preventing the cathode 9 from being toxicated with a sulfide gas.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field emission display element having superior reliability and satisfactory vacuum level in a vacuum container because of little gas discharge from a phosphor layer in a process for evacuating the vacuum container. SOLUTION: A field emission display element 1 has an outer enclosure 4, in which a cathode base 2 with a field emission cathode 5 formed on its inner surface faces an anode base 2 with a phosphor layer 15 on its surface with an designated interval. The phosphor layer emits light through excitation by impact of electrons emitted from the field emission cathode. The phosphor layer is convered by a carbon layer 12. The interval between the cathode base and the anode base is not more than 2 mm which causes an evacuation conductance problem. Thereby, the carbon layer absorbing residual gas containing moisture is prevented and the gas adheres to the phosphor body itself. As a result, the carbon layer absorbs gas already contained in a phosphor particle. Evacuation in an evacuating process in the manufacture of the field emission display element is facilitated, the vacuum level is improved, and reliability as a light emitting element is improved.
