    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out optical modulation without need of a gap forming process for filling a liquid crystal, enabling the structure having a uniform and large area without formation of orientation defects, and attaining improved strength against the outer stress, a high speed and high contrast. SOLUTION: The modulator has a liquid crystal-resin composite 3 composed of a ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 having a spontaneously polarizable characteristics and exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase and a three-dimensional reticular synthetic resin 2, two transparent substrates 5a, 5b on each of which a transparent electrode 4a or 4b is formed and which hold the liquid crystal-resin composite 3 between them in such a manner that the transparent electrodes 4a, 4b are each interposed inside each of the transparent substrates 5a, 5b and allowed to stick to the liquid crystal-resin composite 3, and a power source 8 for applying the direct current voltage having both polarities to the two transparent electrodes 4a, 4b. It becomes unnecessary to control the gap using a seal resin and becomes possible to produce the optical modulator having a uniform and large area by forming the firm liquid crystal-resin composite 3 by dispersing the synthetic resin 2 into the low molecular weight ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 in a high concentration and coating the mixture thus obtained on the transparent electrodes 4a, 4b with the liquid, each being formed on the transparent substrates 5a, 5b.
