    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PCM signal encoder capable of detecting a bit error without using a special error detection word, outputting highly reliable reproducing sound and performing highly efficient encoding and the decoder. SOLUTION: Continuous audio signals are divided into blocks sectioned by a prescribed sample length unit by a block buffer 1 and supplied to predictors 3-6 prepared for plural kinds and the audio signals of the next sample are respectively predicted. Then, the prediction residual signals of predicted value signals outputted from the predictors 3-6 and the source audio signals of the next sample are calculated in subtractors 7-10 and an optimum prediction residual signal is selected from them in a selector 16. Further, the selected prediction residual signal is encoded in a quantizer 17 and bit distribution information, predictor selection information and the source audio signal corresponding to the last prescribed sample part of the encoded prediction error signal included in a preceding stage block are packed and outputted from a multiplexer 18.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce and output a stored code by voice decoding it even when code writing is interrupted during writing the code by comparing the output parameter value of a reproduction output signal obtained by voice decoding processing with preliminarily set threshold and adjusting the initial value of quantization width. SOLUTION: A threshold setting means 7 sets threshold about '(maximum value of) an amplitude of reproduced voice' which is used by an internal state adjusting means 8 and is outputted from an ADPCM decoding means 3. The means 8 compares the maximum value of the amplitude of reproduced voice which is outputted from the means 3 with threshold that is preliminarily set by the means 7 in size relation and performs processing on whether or not to exceed the threshold. When the maximum value of the amplitude of the reproduced voice does not exceed the threshold as a result of the processing, correction is performed in such a manner that the value of quantization width becomes large and on the other hand, when the maximum value of the amplitude of the reproduced voice exceeds the threshold, adjustment not to change the value of the quantization width is made.
