    • PURPOSE:To eliminate an adverse effect due to degraded Ba and make the excessive Ba so as to double as a getter action as well as to secure such a gas discharge panel as being stable and having good performance characteristics, by letting the area of a cathode take more than specified times over the area of a negative glow. CONSTITUTION:In case of a gas discharge panel provided with a lot of anodes 6 and cathodes 4, an insulating base plate 1 and a translucent face plate 7, using an alkaline earth element for these cathodes 4 and having a discharge space sandwiched between the insulating base plate 1 and the translucent face plate 7, the area of each cathode 4 is made to be more than 1.5 times over the area of a negative glow being produced in front of the cathode 4. For example, installing Ba(N3)2 on the base plate by means of a thick film printing process, when it is treated with thermal decomposition in a vacuum, forming a Ba cathode 4 and sealing Xe as much as 20Torr, and the Ba cathode is operated by an electric current 30muA,the area of the negative glow works out at 0.2mm. (0.5phi) so that, in order to steadily operate the panel, it will do simple enough that the area of the cathode 4 is made to widen as far as 1.5 times or 0.3mm. (0.6phi) over this value.
