    • PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of a cationic polymer, economically, by reacting a (meth)acrylamide compound in methanol solvent at a specific temperature with methyl chloride introduced successively into the reaction system according to the progress of the reaction.
      CONSTITUTION: A quaternary ammonium salt is prepared by reacting the amide of formulaIor formula II (R
      1 is 1W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, alicyclic hydrocarbon group or aromatic hydrocarbon group; R
      2 and R
      3 are methyl, ethyl, etc.) with methyl chloride. The reaction is carried out in methanol at 10W50°C introducing methyl chloride into the reaction system. The use of methanol as the reaction solvent gives uniform reaction system, and increases the rate of reaction compared with conventional process. The process is economical since the reaction heat is low and the heat removal can be carried out easily.
