    • PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight foam having a uniform particle diameter in a desired color without corners with an excellent granulation efficiency by granulating an expandable coating material consisting of a core material, SiO2, Al2O3 and an alkali which are principal components at a specific ratio and thermally expanding the resultant granulated material. CONSTITUTION:A coating material consisting of an expandable inorganic substance containing a core material, SiO2 and Al2O3 and an alkali as principal components at 3.0-6.0 molar ratio of the [(SiO2+Al2O3)/M2O] (M is alkaline metal) is used as a raw material. The obtained raw material is granulated to provide a granulated substance in which the periphery of the core material is coated with the coating material. The granulated substance is subsequently heated and expanded at a temperature without melting the core material to afford an inorganic foam. The core material is lightweight and has bubbles or is an expandable material with preferably >=100mu particle diameter. The coating material is obtained by suitably combining expandable powder with an alkaline agent, a foaming agent and other inorganic substances, etc., and preferably has a smaller particle diameter than that of the core material.
