    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmitter for allowing an overhead to pass in a midway device so that monitoring and maintenance operating information can be transmitted and received by using the overhead between arbitrary transmitters, in a synchronous multiplex network.
      SOLUTION: The multiplex transmitter receives a multiplexed signal, consisting of a payload having a plurality of multiplexed main signals and an overhead byte containing a plurality items of monitor and maintenance operating information, and converts the received signal into a multiplexed signal containing payload and information which are subjected to transmission processing, after executing the termination processing of the information and the transmission processing of the payload and the transmits the converted signal. The transmitter is provided with an overhead passing means for allowing maintenance information to pass, which consists of a means of extracting the prescribed monitor and maintenance operating information from the received multiplexed signal, an editing means for editing the information extracted by the extracting means and an inserting means for inserting the output of the editing means into a prescribed position of the overhead byte of the multiplexed signal of a transmitter side.
