    • PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration of the purification efficiency of a catalytic converter by shifting the standard value of the second air-fuel ratio detecting means to the lean side of air-fuel ratio in a specific operation state, when the air-fuel ratio control is applied with correction on the basis of the result of the comparison between the detection value and the standard value of the second air-fuel ratio detecting means having the relatively low detection response speed. CONSTITUTION:The first and second air-fuel ratio detecting means 17 and 18 are installed on the upstream and downstream sides of a catalytic converter in an exhaust passage, and the air-fuel ratio correction coefficient is determined by a determining means 47 on the basis of the output of a comparison means 46 for comparing the detection value of the first air-fuel ratio detecting means 17 and the comparison standard value by a setting means 45. Further, the air-fuel ratio control by an air-fuel ratio control means 48 consisting of the means 45-47 is applied with correction by a correcting means 49 on the basis of the output of a comparison means 53 for comparing the detection value of the second air-fuel ratio detecting means 18 and the standard value by a setting means 49A. In this case, if the low speed low load operation is detected by a detecting means 50, the second setting means 49B is selected a selecting means 49C, and the second standard value which is shifted to the lean side is supplied into the comparing means 53.

    • PURPOSE:To increase the purification efficiency of a catalytic converter to the max. by controlling the compulsory variation state of the air-fuel ratio by a compulsory air-fuel ratio varying means which can compulsorily varies the air-fuel ratio with the prescribed frequency and amplitude on the basis of the output supplied from an exhaust gas detecting means. CONSTITUTION:A compulsory air-fuel ratio varying means 45 and an air-fuel ratio variation control means 47, or an air-fuel ratio correction coefficient setting means 36 are selected through switching means 38 and 39, and when the setting means 36 is selected, the air-fuel ratio correction coefficient corresponding to the engine revolution speed and load is set. When the means 45 and 47 are selected, the compulsory air-fuel ratio varying means 45 sets the feedback correction coefficient and compulsorily varies the air-fuel ratio with the prescribed frequency and amplitude, and the compulsory variation state of the air-fuel ratio is controlled by the air-fuel ratio variation control means 47 on the basis of the output of an O2 sensor 17, and the coefficient for correcting the middle value of the air-fuel ratio is set, and the middle value (average value) of the air-fuel ratio is variation-corrected. Thus, air-fuel ratio can be controlled so that the purification efficiency of a catalytic converter becomes max.
