The compd. of the formula II is, e.g., trans-4- ethyl-1-(4-cyanophenyl)cyclohexane. The compd. of the formula III is, e.g., 4-propylcyclohexyl 4-(4-ethylcyclohexyl)benzoate.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflective liquid crystal display element and its driving method for obtaining a display in a focal conic state with low reflectance and a high contrast ratio and for obtaining a uniform display in a display screen in a relatively short rewriting time.
      SOLUTION: The reflective liquid crystal display element includes a first transparent electrode substrate, a second transparent electrode substrate, and a cholesteric liquid crystal material. The reflective liquid crystal display element further includes a planar means 12 that collectively changes the cholesteric liquid crystal material into a planar state, a focal conic means 13 that collectively changes the cholesteric liquid crystal material into a focal conic state, and a writing means 14 that writes an image. The focal conic means 13 applies second bipolar pulses as alternating with a non-voltage application period, to the cholesteric liquid crystal material for several times.
