CONSTITUTION:(A) A biphenyl of formula I (R1 is 2-8C straight-chain alkyl, preferably ethyl-, n-propyl, n-butyl, straight-chain alkoxy, preferably ethoxy-n-propoxy-), (B) a phenylcyclohexane or formula II (R2 is 2-7C straight-chain alkyl, preferably ethyl), (C) cyanophenyl cyclohexylbenzoate of formula III (R3 is straight- chain alkyl of 2,4 or 5 carbon atoms) and (D) a biphenylcyclohexane of formula IV (R4 is straight-chain alkyl of 3-5 carbon atoms, preferably n-amyl) are mixed in amounts of 10-30wt% (A), 30-45wt% (B), 5-10wt% (C) and 10-30wt% (D) respectively to give the objective composition. EFFECT:The response speed is high in the cryogenic zone.

It is not pref. for R1 to be C9 or higher in a compound of the formula I, because viscosity of the liquid crystal composition becomes high and response property becomes bas as well as transition from a namatic phase to another phase occurs easily.
