    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a projection type display device to have no optical leak and less noise and to obtain a distortion-free image even when using a thin mirror. SOLUTION: The projection type display device comprises a light source, a color separating means of separating projection light from the light source into a plurality of color light beams, a plurality of light valves which receive the separated color light beams to generate image light beams, a color composing means which puts projection light beams from the plurality light valves together into one composite light beam, and a projection lens which enlarges and projects the composite light beam. The color separating means and the color composing means include dichroic mirrors (25, 26) and a total reflecting mirror (34), and at least one mirror (66) of the dichroic mirrors and total reflecting mirror is held on fixed structures (70, 71) by three holding members (68), each of which is composed so that one point on one surface of the mirror and one corresonding point on a surface on the opposite side are sandwiched in point contact with each other.       SOLUTION: In the polarized light conversion apparatus 20D, the size of a lens at the center part in a Z direction of a lens array 21B is larger than that at other part. The focal distances of lenses in the lens array 21B are equal to each other. The Y-Z surfaces of the large lens and the small lens in the lens array 21B are similar to each other. The lens array 22B arranged to be opposed to the lens array 21B has the same shape as the lens array 21B. The polarized light converting device 25C comprises a polarized light converting device 25CM at the center part and polarized light converting devices 25CU and 25CD on both sides of the polarized light converting device 25CM corresponding to the size of the lens in the lens array 22B. The polarized light converting devices 25CU and 25CD have the same shape as each other, and the cross section of the polarized light converting element of the polarized light converting device 25CM is similar to that of the polarized light converting device 25CU. The length in a direction X and that in a direction Z of the incident surface of the polarized light converting device 25CM are EX/2 and EZ respectively.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization converting device, an illuminating device and a liquid crystal projector which can improve the use efficiency of light. SOLUTION: A polarization converting element 25A is equipped with polarization converting elements 25U and 25D having the longitudinal direction along the Z direction and a polarization converting element 25M having the longitudinal direction along the X direction and disposed between the devices 25U and 25D, and the images of the light emitting part of the light source are included in a stripe effective incident region (hatched region). Only the center part of the lens array may be made larger in the lens size than lenses in other region and the width of an incident face of the polarization converting element may be made half of the width of the corresponding lens. Or, the direction of arc gap of a lamp may be only tilted from an optical axis of a parabolic mirror. When the parabolic mirror with both sides cut is used, the longitudinal direction of the stripe effective incident region of the polarization converting element is made parallel to the longitudinal direction of the aperture end of the parabolic mirror. When a combination of a spherical mirror and a convex lens is used instead of the parabolic mirror, a protruding part of the light source is arranged perpendicular to the optical axis.
