    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent excess pulverization accompanying the surface modification of toner particles, to efficiently obtain surface modified particles having sharp grain size distribution with less fine powder and having high sphericity with less influence of heat, and to make the surface profile of surface modified particles be more optionally controlled. SOLUTION: The method for producing toner includes steps of producing toner source particles containing a binder resin and a colorant and of obtaining toner particles by subjecting the toner source particles to surface modification treatment by using a surface modifying apparatus. In the surface modifying apparatus, the toner source particles fed through a feeding part 37 to a main body casing 30 are introduced into a first space 47 where particles having a predetermined size or smaller are removed by a classifying means and continuously discharged to the outside of the apparatus, while the rest of the particles are introduced via a second space 48 into a surface modifying means 49 where the surface is reformed, and further the particles are again circulated into the first space so as to repeat classification and surface modification.
