摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a page printer with a data compression function adaptable to a buffer memory size smaller than full page data. SOLUTION: A peripheral unit 10 converts an input data flow (hereinafter called DF) into page-arranged outputs and includes a RAM 20 whose capacity is insufficient in size to accommodate an entire page of raster data. The peripheral unit 10 also includes a processor 12 and a control memory 22 that holds a plurality of data compression procedures 34, 36 and 38, exhibiting different characteristics. The peripheral unit 10 implements a method for compressing portions of the input DF that includes steps of: allocating (72) the RAM to portions of the input DF; determining (78) when an insufficient amount of the RAM is available for such allocation; employing (82) a first data compression procedure on the input DF portion to produce a compressed data portion; testing (78) the compressed data portion to determine if a level of compression has been achieved that exceeds a threshold and, if not; and using succeeding data compression (84, 86) procedures and repeating the test for each procedure against the threshold, whereby the compression procedure that first enables the threshold level of compression to be achieved is the compression procedure used to compress the DF portion. Electrodes 2 to apply an electric field on at least a part of the liquid crystal material are disposed on at least one cell wall. A grating alignment structure 3 is formed on the inner surface of at least a first cell wall. The cell is irradiated with proper light to effect photopolymerization of the polymer precursor through the first cell wall.
