The cyclopentadiene is used in an amount of preferably 1-10mol based on the compound represented by formula II and especially preferably 1-2mol based thereon for the purpose of suppressing side reaction. The part of the C-C double bond in the compound represented by formula I is reduced to afford a tricyclo[5.2.1.0 , ]decane-2-carboxylic acid ester represented by formula III. Furthermore, the compound represented by formula III is useful as a perfume and is obtained by remarkably improving the operating efficiency and productivity as compared with those of the conventional Koch carboxylating reaction.
