    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetostrictive torque sensor capable of suppressing deterioration in detection accuracy.SOLUTION: A magnetostrictive torque sensor 41 comprises: a rotation shaft 24 having a magnetostrictive part such as a magnetostrictive film 82; and coils such as detection coils 85, 85 for detecting changes in magnetic characteristics such as magnetic permeability of a magnetostrictive film 81. The rotation shaft 24 further includes an extension part 24e that is separate from the magnetostrictive part on the side of a shaft end part such as a connection part 24i of the rotation shaft 24. A cross-sectional area of a part of the rotation shaft 24, having the extension part 24e is larger than a cross-sectional area of a part of the rotation shaft 24 interposed between the extension part 24e and the magnetostrictive part 82, on a flat surface vertical to a central axis CL of the rotation shaft 24. The rotation shaft 24 itself and the extension part 24e are made of a magnetic material. Further, the magnetostrictive torque sensor 41 preferably comprises a magnetic shield 54a opposing the extension part 24e.

SOLUTION: The vehicular electric power steering device 10 has a rack-and-pinion mechanism 25 consisting of a pinion shaft 24 connected to a steering wheel and a rack shaft 26 connected to steered wheels on a steering system 20 from the steering wheel 21 to the steered wheels 29, detects the steering torque applied to the steering wheel by a magnetostriction type steering torque sensor 41, generates the supporting torque according to the steering torque, and transmits the supporting torque to the pinion shaft. The magnetostriction type steering torque sensor is provided on the pinion shaft. The pinion shaft and the rack shaft are stored in a housing 51.
