    • PURPOSE:To make sealing work of upper end plug efficient by melting with laser irradiation around a vent hole at the upper surface of an upper end plug, sucking in the vent hole and forming a projection for welding for sealing the end part. CONSTITUTION:A vent hole 7 is formed in the axis direction of an upper end plug 5 and a projection for welding 8 is formed in ring shape in one with the same material as the end plug 5 around the hole 7 of the end plug upper surface 5a. After inserting the upper part of the fuel rod in a pressure room in a chamber and introducing helium gas of ca. 25 to 35kg/cm , laser light is casted by way of a laser light transmission part consisting of pressure resistant glass. The projection for welding 8 is melted by the radiation of laser light and sucked in a hole 1 owing to capillary effect to block the hole 7. By this, the labor and time required for gap adjustment between electrodes and exchange of electrodes are avoided and sealing work of the upper end plug is improved in efficiency.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the falling of short fuel rods during transportation and the separation of the short fuel rods during the operation of a reactor so as to improve fuel reliability. CONSTITUTION:The shank parts 26 of the lower end plugs 23 of a short fuel rod 3 and a long fuel rod 2 adjacent to the short fuel rod 3 are provided with through holes 24. A through hole 17 communicated with the through holes 24 is provided horizontally from the outer side face of a lower tie plate 7. The fixing pin 27 of a separation preventing stopper 16 is inserted into the through hole 17 and the through holes 24. The plate body 19 of the separation preventing stopper 16 is brought into contact with a cutout part 18 provided at the outer side face of the lower tie plate 7, and the separation preventing stopper 16 is fixed to the lower tie plate 7 by screws 22. The falling of a fuel assembly during transportation and the separation of the short fuel rod 3 during the operation of a reactor can be thereby prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To allow easy gripping of fuel rod by protruding external threads of smaller diameter than an end plug in the axial direction from the tip of the end plug and engaging a convenient gripper with the protrusions. CONSTITUTION:An end plug 7 is secured to the upper and lower end parts of the coating pipe 1a for a part of a fuel assembly, i.e., a fuel rod 1, or the lower end of a simple pipe and substantially formed into a cylinder having a small diameter part 18 to be inserted into each pipe. The end plug 7 is provided with externally threaded 8 protrusions 9, having smaller diameter than the cylindrical part of end plug body 7a, in the axial direction from the center at the tip part. A gripper tool of simple structure having an internally threaded part meshing the protrusions 9 is engaged with the fuel rod 1 by rotating the tool or the fuel rod 1. This structure allows convenient insertion of the fuel rod 1 into a supporting grid at low cost. Alternatively, the end plug may be internally threaded and an externally threaded tool may be employed.
