    • PURPOSE:To detect exactly the entire region of an air-fuel ratio and theoretical air-fuel ratio by disposing an oxygen pump and an oxygen sensor to face each other apart at a slight space and changing over suitably the electrode polarities thereof. CONSTITUTION:A solid electrolyte oxygen pump 6 and a solid electrolyte oxygen sensor 10 are disposed to face each other at a slight space (d) of about 0.1mm. in an exhaust pipe 1. The electromotive force (e) generated between the electrodes 8, 9 of the sensor 10 is impressed via a polarity change-over switch SW and a resistor R1 to the inversion input terminal of an effect amplifier A and a transistor TR is driven by the output proportional to a difference from the reference voltage VRef impressed to the non-inversion input terminal, by which the pump current IP flowing between the electrodes 4 and 5 of the pump 6 is controlled. The electromotive force of the sensor 10 is controlled to about 200mV by the above-mentioned constitution, by which the change in the pump current IP of the pump 6 is detected and the exact detection of the theoretical air-fuel ratio and the entire region of the air-fuel ratio is made possible.

    • PURPOSE:To detect an air-fuel ratio from a rich region to a lean region by one detector, by increasing the oxygen content of gas to be inspected by using an oxygen pump while measuring the increased oxygen content by a lean sensor. CONSTITUTION:An air-fuel ratio detector contains a ceramic cylinder 1, a gas diffusion orifice 2, a disc shaped solid electrolyte and electrodes 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b and connected to a DC power source 7 through the electrodes 4a, 5a and a lead wire 6a to constitute an oxygen pump while connected to a DC constant voltage power source 8 and a current measuring apparatus 9 through the electrodes 4b, 5b and a lead wire 6b to constitute a lean sensor. Because a constant amount of oxygen flows from the electrode 5a in the open air side to the electrode 4a to be always flowed into gas to be inspected introduced into the detector from the diffusion orifice 2, the gas to be inspected is brought to a lean state. Because the gas to be inspected comes to a lean state even if said gas is a rich state, the air-fuel ratio of the gas in the space between the diffusion orifice 2 and the solid electrolyte 3 is detected by the lean sensor, that is, by one detector.

    • PURPOSE:To make it possible to carry out the feed-back control of engine operating air-fuel ratio at an arbitrary air-fuel ratio, by providing such an arrangement that a chemical equivalent point of exhaust gas in a closed hollow chamber provided with a diffusion pore for introducing exhaust gas to be measured, is detected under the supply of oxygen. CONSTITUTION:In an air-fuel ratio detecting device 8 disposed in an exhaust pipe 7, there is provided a solid electrolyte oxygen pump body 11 made of sintered zirconia and formed in a bottomed cylinder shape, platinum electrodes 12, 13 being attached to both inner and outer surfaces of the body 11. Further, there is provided a solid electrolyte oxygen concentration detector body 15 made of the same material and formed in the same shape, platinum electrodes 12, 13 being attached to both inner and outer surfaces of the body 15. The electrodes 13, 17 are disposed in a closed hollow chamber B defined by the bodies 11, 17 and partition walls 19, 20, and exhaust gas is introduced into the above-mentioned chamber B through a diffusion pore 21 formed in the partition wall 20. Further, an arrangement is provided such that electromotive forces which correspond respectively to the oxygen concentrations in the chamber B and in the body 15 may be generated, and the outputs thereof are utilized for the control of air- fuel ratio.

Since the moved quantity can be controlled freely, the air fuel ratios at the rich and lean sides are measured arbitrarily and the inexpensive sensor superior in practicality can be obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To improve accuracy and to enable mass production by forming three green sheets for a pump cell and sensor cell formed with electrodes sandwiching a reference oxygen chamber green sheet as the center, and a reference oxygen chamber punched with plural holes, calcining after thermopressing. CONSTITUTION:An org. binder is added to the powder of a solid electrolyte and plate-shaped green sheet is formed and is cut to a desired size. A pump cell side electrode 2 is formed on the green sheet to manufacuture a green sheet 5 for a pump cell and a sensor cell side electrode 3 is formed thereon to manufacture a green sheet 6 for a sensor cell, respectively. Plural holes 8' are further punched therein to form a green sheet 7' for a reference oxygen chamber. The sheets 5, 6 and 7' are superposed in a way as to sandwich the sheet 7' between the two sheets and the laminated sheets are subjected to thermocompression bonding and calcining to make the green sheet air-impermeable and to make the holes 8 airtight. The sheets 5, 6 are then airtightly held without deformation and therfore the oxygen chamber having high accuracy without change in the volume of the reference oxygen chamber and without variance is manufactured.

    • PURPOSE:To enable an easy evaluation of the airtightness at the sealed section of a solid electrolytic oxygen sensor by measuring electric characteristic in the transient period of the sensor to determine a difference between the electric characteristic and that in the transient period of a standard sensor. CONSTITUTION:A solid electrolytic oxygen sensor 1 is set in a gas G to be measured while a standard voltage variation is inputted into a comparator circuit 4b. Then, when current flows through an oxygen ion conduction plate 1a of the solid electrolytic oxygen sensor 1, pumping is started while a voltage between two electrodes 1b and 1b is outputted to an arithmetic circuit 4a to compute a voltage variation. In case the solid electrolytic oxygen sensor 1 is defective, impairing the airthightness of the sealed part between the oxygen ion conduction plate 1a and a cover 2, excess oxygen is diffused into an isolation chamber C from the sealed part. Thus, the voltage variation of the solid electrolytic oxygen sensor 1 shows a dull change from the rising thereof (the transient period B1) as indicated by the voltage change curve B as illustrated. The voltage variation is compared with the standard voltage variation and a deficiency signal is outputted from the comparator circuit 4b while the deficiency is indicated on a display 4c.

During suspension of a combustor 1, at its start, the valve 42 is opened to introduce the air into the chamber 40, and current of the detector 3 is measured at that time to store the measured value in a storage device 51. Then, the valve 42 is closed, and an oxygen concn. in the waste gas is measured by correcting the detector 3 in accordance with said stored signal.
