    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen the opportunity for increasing the amount of soot following change-over between combustion at low temperature and second combustion while suppressing the generation of soot and NOx. SOLUTION: The change-over of an engine can be selectively made between combustion at low temperature in which scarcely no soot is generated because the amount of EGR gas (exhaust gas recalculation) to be fed to the inside of a combustion chamber 5, is much more than the amount of EGR gas where the generation of soot is at its peak, and second combustion in which the amount of EGR gas to be fed, is much less than the amount of EGR gas where the generation of soot is at its peak. When it is forecasted based on the frequency of change in loading obtained by a loading sensor 51 and a crank angle sensor 52, information on roads to go by, which is obtained by a navigation system 60 and the like, that the engine is in an operating condition high in the frequency of change-over between combustion at low temperature and second combustion, the execution of combustion at low temperature is prohibited, or the contraction of an operating area for performing combustion at low temperature recluses the frequency of change-over between combustion at low temperature and second combustion.
